How good is a black belt???
Looks like everyone can get it if they do martial arts long enough, and don’t need talent. I’m getting a bit doubful about black belts now that I know it doesn’t really require talent like in chess, basketball, golf, etc.
There are black belts and there are Black-belts. You are right in that the greater number of McDojos out there with their watered down standards for testing and promotion will give almost anyone a black-belt. Even a child or adult that can not do a decent form or kata, whose kicks lack power and the needed balance for other than sloppy execution and who believes that this is how the rest of the martial arts community is can get a black-belt. They can recite that school creed though, and can show you that they attended class on that automated attendance sheet 156 times in the past year and a report card that shows that their grades have improved or a pant size a few sizes less than what they used to wear.
Sadly in some ways this is the turn that the martial arts industry has taken over the last twenty or so years. While the martial arts has always been about self improvement and one reaching their full potential it was also at one time a means of learning how to defend yourself in a time when your life could very easily depend on that and about combat. The industry is now dominated by schools that sell self-improvement and character building without teaching the necessary combat skills and their applications and maintaining a high standard way to much and way to often.
Don’t be totally discouraged though. There still are some schools and instructors who have not fallen so low as the majority of the others or been put out of business by the McDojos. When you see them, the knowledge, skill, speed, power, and intenstiy with which they execute things is far better than most anyone else’s and is clearly evident.
